Fitting the new "iceberg detection device" - we don't want to do a Titanic on this forthcoming trip!! In trueCosmic Dancer fashion it only took an hour to fit the dome, but almost 3 hours to get the wire down the mast.
Preparing for the Arctic
Fititng a new radar also meant fitting a new chart plotter - so yet another a big hole had to be cut in our instrument panel.
Preparing for the Arctic
The end result - only a few hundred miles of wire at the back to connect up now!
Preparing for the Arctic
Having looked at the lack of depth soundings on the charts of north Greenland a new forward looking echo sounder was ordered and fitted. We suspect it will be a lot more use than some of the distinctly featureless charts we paid a lot of money for!!
Preparing for the Arctic
Just itching to get back in the water.
Preparing for the Arctic
The new forward looking echo sounder transducer all fitted nd ready to go
Preparing for the Arctic
Putting in the SIMNET NMEA2000 network - still a load more wires to add and route through the boat.
Preparing for the Arctic
We've even managed to get the older NMEA 0183 instruments talking to the plotter - something that is theoretically possible but doesn't always work that smoothly in practice
Preparing for the Arctic
The first set of GRIB files uploaded and ovelaid on the chart
Preparing for the Arctic
Switched it all one and its working - great relief all round!!
Preparing for the Arctic
Forward looking echo sounder fitted and tested - 10 ft from the jetty wall
Preparing for the Arctic
Planning the SIMNET NMEA 2000 network for the new plotter - like all the best plans - scratched out on the back of a notebook!
Preparing for the Arctic
Radar now fully fitted and working
Preparing for the Arctic
The old forward looking echo sounder tranducer which we had to replace. It is designed to fail at the hull boundary if it hits something rather than damaging the through hull fitting - the design worked as the crack just below the washer shows.
Preparing for the Arctic
Cosmic Dancer spent the winter sitting on a cradle once occupied by a rather famous American yacht!
